Port Klang is located on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, northeast of the Strait of Malacca, and only 38 kilometers from the capital, Kuala Lumpur. It is one of Malaysia’s most important ports. In 2024, Port Klang handled a container throughput of 14.64 million tons, marking a 4.1% year-on-year increase and setting a new record. However, with the continuous growth in cargo demand, the current capacity of Port Klang can no longer meet Malaysia’s economic development needs. As a result, the Malaysian government has initiated an expansion project for Port Klang.

The project is located in the Free Trade Zone of Port Klang, Selangor, and is planned to be implemented in two phases. The expansion will extend the terminal shoreline by 4.8 kilometers and add eight new berths. The first phase will involve the construction of four berths, which are expected to be completed by 2043. Once the expansion is finished, Port Klang will be able to handle an additional 13 million TEUs, meeting the demand for the next 10 to 15 years.

The project has already entered the construction phase, with dredging of the navigation channel and port basin underway. As of now, the first vessel filling operation has been successfully completed.
