The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has upgraded its dredging vessel Italeni by installing a new marine excavator to improve dredging capacity at South Africa’s commercial ports. The vessel is used to maintain the required depth of port berths, basins, and entrance channels, ensuring safe navigation for ships.
The new excavator, which cost R76 million (about $4.1 million), can handle dredged material weighing up to 2 tons and operate within a 20-meter radius. This upgrade boosts Italeni’s annual dredging volume from 94,000 m³ to 150,000 m³, significantly increasing efficiency.
The new equipment replaces the older excavator installed in 2014, which had reached the end of its service life. TNPA says the upgrade supports safer and more sustainable dredging practices while improving operational performance.
