Harbor dredging project underway

The long-awaited dredging project to deepen the federal navigation channel and improve efficiency and reliability of navigation to and from Grays Harbor got underway.

American Construction Company has the $27 million contract to remove approximately 3.5 million cubic yards of material and maintain the channel in the inner harbor. The work is expected to be completed by late September of 2018.

The project will deepen the channel from minus-36 feet to minus-38 feet MLLW (Mean Lower Low Water), which is the average height of the lowest tide recorded each day.

The suitable dredged material will be placed at either the Point Chehalis or South Jetty disposal site, and will also be used for beach nourishment at South Beach and Half Moon Bay as a deterrent to beach erosion. Approximately 22,000 cubic yards of material is deemed unsuitable for open water disposal and will be placed in an upland placement site near Terminal 3.

GUYANA GOVERNMENT ACQUIRES DREDGER

The Guyana government is planning to acquire a dredger that would deepen, among other waterways, the Demerara River.

For several years, shipping companies and their umbrella organization, the Shipping Association of Guyana (SAG), have been lobbying the government to dredge the Demerara River to accommodate larger ships with more cargo and so lower freight costs to and from the country.

The government has budgeted £8 million to acquire a dredger in 2017. Financing is expected to be provided by Britain’s Department for International Development under the United Kingdom-Caribbean Infrastructure Programme.

It is reported that the Maritime Administration (MARAD) intends to dredge the Demerara River to a depth of nine to 10 meters, compared to the current depth of six meters.

The Demerara River is Guyana’s major waterway to the commercial and administrative city of Georgetown.

India dredging projects and port development

The Ministry of Shipping of India has formulated a revised Central Sector Scheme aimed to provide financial support for the creation of infrastructure.

Under the scheme, projects for construction of exclusive coastal berths for coastal cargo and berths/jetties for passenger ferries; mechanization of coastal berths; capital dredging for operating non-major ports; construction of breakwaters for existing & Greenfield Non-major ports; construction of berths/ jetties in National Waterways and islands by State Governments/UT; and construction of platforms/ jetties for hovercrafts/seaplanes will be considered for assistance.

The main purpose of the revised scheme is to promote coastal shipping and increase its share in domestic cargo movement, which is currently only as low as 7%, compared to other developed countries in Europe and Asia.

The creation of exclusive berths for coastal shipping and its mechanization will reduce waiting time for coastal vessels resulting in reduced cost. The capital dredging and construction of breakwaters shall help in smoother navigation of large vessels into the ports and thus facilitate the development of existing and Greenfield ports. With coastal shipping being more environment-friendly mode of transport compared to rail and road, it would also help in reducing pollution.
