USA: Dredging Underway to Reopen Mississippi River Navigation Channel

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is preparing to reopen the 9-foot navigation channel along the Mississippi River to commercial navigation.

The Corps and its contractors will begin dredging today, July 25, near Winona, Minn., in Pool 6 from river mile 718 to 724. The Corps is already dredging in Pool 4, near Alma, Wis., at river mile 754. High flows from the June floods caused dredge material to fill areas within the channel.

The Corps hopes to have the area near Alma reopened later today, and anticipates opening the area near Winona on Tuesday, July 29 with a 100-foot wide pilot channel. The Corps hopes to widen the channel to 200 feet by August 2.

At this time, the dredged material will be placed at various placement sites along the river. The Corps may need to explore additional material placement options should future dredging requirements become necessary.

Slovenia: Koper Dredging Project in Full Swing

The Port of Koper dredging scheme is moving forward. The second, larger dredger, owned by the Netherlands-based contractor Van Oord, yesterday commenced dredging works aimed at the seabed deepening along the Container Terminal to 14 metres.

By the end of August, the trailing suction hopper dredger Dravo Costa Dorada will remove about 90 Olympic-size swimming pools of sea sediments (silt) that will be pumped to the disposal sites in the port’s hinterland.

For this purpose, a three-kilometre long pipeline was laid over the last weeks. The dredger will operate 24 hours/day.

The dredged material which is temporarily stored in its own hopper is then pumped through a pipeline to the disposal site.

Van Oord commenced the works last week when a smaller dredger started deepening the seabed under the construction of the container quayside which is technically particularly challenging.

Singapore: IADC Seminar on Dredging and Reclamation Scheduled for October

For (future) decision makers and their advisors in governments, port and harbour authorities, off-shore companies and other organisations that have to execute dredging projects, the International Association of Dredging Companies organises the International Seminar on Dredging and Reclamation.

The IADC Seminar will be held from Monday 27 October through Friday 31 October 2014 at Grand Park City Hall hotel, 10 Coleman Street, Singapore 179809.

The Seminar in Brief

To optimise the chances of the successful completion of a project, contracting parties should, from the start, fully understand the requirements of a dredging project.

This five-day course strives to provide an understanding through lectures by experts in the field and workshops, partly conducted on-site in order to give the “students” hands-on experience.

USA: Delaware River Dredging Kicks Off

Dredging operations conducted by Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company at Billingsport Range and Tinicum Range of the Delaware River commenced yesterday.

This deepening scheme will continue until September 15, 2014, according to gac.com.

During this operation there will be two hopper dredgers working in the area, the Dodge Island and the Padre Island. There will be a portion of pipeline off the Fort Mifflin disposal area that the hopper dredgers will use to transfer the dredged material.

Mariners are cautioned to remain a safe distance away from the dredgers, buoys, cables, pipeline, barges, derricks, wires and related equipment.

Australia: Dredging Starts at Abell Point Marina

Abell Point Marina dredging project is currently underway. The project started few days ago after completing the first tests successfully.

The dredging team have been working hard over the past three months to profile a dredging process that will effectively target high areas areas across the marina that have previously caused access issues on a low tide.

In targeting 20% of high areas across the marina, the dredging team believe that it can rectify 80% of the problem areas allowing greater access to berths for deeper draft vessels.

The dredging project will first target high areas in O/P arm, M/N arm, L arm and around the fuel wharf before scoping out a full maintenance schedule of the marina. The project is predicted to last for 6 – 8 months with all dredge material being pumped into the retention pond to develop a community parkland for marina customers to enjoy with regular events planned for this area.
